A Slimcado? Now I’ve Seen Everything…

I popped into the grocery store to grab an Avacado.
(It was taco night at my house.)

Except… there were no avacados. Instead, I found a "Slimcado."

slimcado

Apparently, through the marvels of genetic engineering, scientists have found a way to manufacture an avacado with 35% fewer calories and 50% less fat.

Here’s The Problem…

The avacado is (was?) chock-full of healthy fats.

I’m talking about mono-unsaturated fats. The "good" fats that most of us are sorely lacking in our diets.

So by removing half of the fat from the avacado, scientists are actually taking a perfectly good food and making it worse for you.

It’s the equivalent of genetically-altering oranges to remove the Vitamin C. (Don’t get any ideas, slimcado makers.)

Overweight? Blame the avacado.

I understand that Americans are getting fatter and everybody’s looking for a way to cut calories… but are Avacados really the culprit behind the obesity crisis?

Was anyone getting fat because they were simply eating too many Avacodos?

(Clearly, this child has been eating way too many Avacados. Luckily his parents have weaned him off and put him on the standard American diet of soda pop and french fries.)

Rant over.

Moral of the story? Don’t buy Slimcados.

This is ridiculous. The bad part…people will actually buy it and feel like they are making “good choices” in their diets.

    Thanks for your comment Koa.

Yeah, I agree 100%. I can already picture people saying, “Sure I eat fast food three times a day and never exercise… but I eat Slimcado’s instead of regular avacados so I should be losing weight…”

I enjoyed your blog on slimcados. I purchased my first one and it is sitting in the kitchen ready to be devoured. Why did I buy one? Well, first, it was the only ‘cado I found at that time; second, as a nutrition student, I really enjoy learning about and trying new foods for future clients; last, while far too many too overindulge in the ‘bad fats’ and don’t consume enough of the ‘good fats’, there are some like myself who eat a LOT of good fats (yet I’m still almost on the below avg. for my BMI) and would like to stay a healthy weight by cutting on the calories. So, if I’m going to purchase an avocado and barely get much for my guacamole yet have quite a lot of calories for such a small thing- I can purchase 2 or 3 slimcados (which are quite large), still get plenty of ‘good fats’ and yes, still consume plenty of calories- but without overdoing it. = )

I still agree with your thoughts. I also believe that if this is going to take over, they have to educate people and provide the options so people can eat their regular ‘cados. Kudos to writing about this. An interesting outlook on taking the vitamin C out of oranges = ) I guess we’ll have to keep our eyes peeled for whatever else comes along in the engineering of food products.
