Hollywood Muscle: Top Five Physique Transformations
By Matt (The Average White Dude) | August 29, 2007
Every so often, you’ll see an actor make an incredible physique transformation. One day they’re skinny and frail and all of sudden they look huge and ripped.
Each transformation seems more impressive than the next. So today, I’m going to compile a list of the top five
Remember, this list is just my personal opinion. If you think I missed an incredible
Ok, here are my…
Top Five
I sat down and racked my brain to come up with what I thought were the top five most impressive
Only problem is… I came up with six.So somebody had to fall out of the top five and into the honorable mention category.
Honorable Mention: Toby Maguire, Spiderman
Quite a few fans were upset when Toby Maguire was named the lead for the Spiderman franchise. Sure, Peter Parker was supposed to be a scientist… but many fans thought Sony crossed the "geek" link when Toby landed the spot.

But he shocked critics and added quite a few more female admirers to his fan base when he added muscle and transformed his physique to something that closer resembles a body built by crime fighting.

Good job Toby. Now, let’s dive into the top five…
Number Five: Brad Pitt, Fight Club AND
Now, granted, Brad Pitt has never been fat. It’s not like he had to shed hundreds of pounds to get the role of Tyler Durden in Fight Club.
But he got so ridiculously ripped and caused such a buzz that I had to include him in the top five.
It appears he even added some muscle (while staying just as ripped) for his role in
Number Four: Will Smith, Ali
Remember the tall, skinny Fresh Prince Of Bel Aire?
Yes, Will Smith with the long skinny arms and the big ears.

Except… Will Smith didn’t look so skinny when Ali landed in theaters.

Adding that kind of bulk is what landed Will Smith’s physical transformation for his role in Ali at our number four spot.
Number Three: Ryan Reynolds, The Amityville Horror
Ryan Reynolds certainly didn’t cast the image of a "buff dude" when he starred in Two Guys, A Girl &

Which is probably why it was so shocking when this version of Ryan Reynolds showed up on the silver screen.

Number Two: Ed Norton, American History X
This is by far one of the most dramatic
And for good reason.
![]()
Edward Norton, typically known as a skinny, awkward guy… absolutely shocked and terrified audiences when appeared on screen to play a Nazi skin-head with 30 extra pounds of muscle.

Which leads us to the number one spot…
Number One Most Impressive
When it comes to dramatic physique transformations, I have to give the top spot to Christian Bale.
Take a look at what he’s done for the following roles and see if you agree.
For the movie American Psycho, Christian Bale got incredibly ripped.

While most guys would love to look like that, Christian Bale did the unthinkable:
He lost 60 pounds for his role in The Machinist.

But Mr. Bale still wasn’t done. He then gained over 100 pounds to play the beefed up role of Batman in the movie, Batman Begins.

In my book, Christian Bale has accomplished the most incredible Hollywood Physique transformations and therefore has rightfully earned the number one spot.

I think its funny you give the honorable mention to Tobey MacGUire. IMO, that guy had to work twice as hard as those other dudes.
Im skinny and gaining muscle has been the hardest 10 years of my life. Im still not where I want to be. Are you going to tell us how these dudes did it (especially McGuire)?

This was a terrific and extremely well-thought out article. You couldn’t have selected two better choices than Christian Bale and Will Smith. I myself might have included Mark Wahlberg, primarily because he’s successfully maintained an impressive physique throughout his various body changes. Like Brad Pitt, he never seems to have diificulty remaining in the single-digit body fat range, despite some rather erratic weight fluctuations. It’s been reported that his weight can range anywhere from 160 pounds (albeit at 5′7″) to 205 pounds. Consider his forty pound weight loss to portray a 70’s porn star in “Boogie Nights”, only to return to “Marky Mark” proportions in “The Italian Job”. Also, LL Cool J has developed a phenomenal level of fitness well into his early forties. And how about Christopher Knight (”Peter” from “The Brady Bunch”) becoming fit and muscular at close to 50 years old? And lest we forget; ‘ol Carrot Top has become jacked in his forties as well.

Chuck & Kevin:
I have a little bit of information on how a few of these actors made such dramatic transformations. A few have admitted to using a steroids.
I will be writing a follow up article about this.
LDScheme:
That was a GREAT comment. I will probably write another and include many of your choices. Thanks for contributing.

Of the top 5 Hollywood transformations, I think Ryan Reynolds was the most amazing. Prior to shooting his movie, he had a solid weight training and diet plan. I read on the internet that he trained for 5 months using a lot of Olympic lifts such as cleans & dead lifts. Just wanted to share my thoughts.

Hey there.
When I read this article I was blown away at the way these actors can shape their body’s seemingly
easily. But these guys must work their asses off in training. The most impressive gains i thought were in the form of Ed Norton, this knocked me off my chair. He didn’t look remotely like he did when he played a skinny awkward teen in that muder mystery. Any tips on their secrets?
And also if you dont mind helping me out with this question…If you eat a proper bulking diet is it possible to add mass with body weight excersises like push ups ect?
regards Andrew.

Hiya there
Being the skinny average white guy isn’t great. I’ve only noticed recently that people don’t like the fact that I look like Christian Bale in “The Machinist”. His weight gain of 100 pounds is amazing and has tempted me to ask you to write a follow up article for all of us who want that amazing amount of muscle that these guys have gained.
Cheers, Matt.
